1-01 Stereoscope & Picture Cards ... over 60 cards in the holder which is 8" high and appears as a two volume set of books.  Over 100 years old.  My grandparents had this set in the last years of the 19th century.  They were new then, but have suffered at the hands of grandchildren! Stereoscopy (also called stereoscopic or 3-D imaging) refers to a technique for creating or enhancing the illusion of depth in an image by presenting two offset images separately to the left and right eye of the viewer. Both of these 2-D offset images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of 3-D depth.

1-02  Nippon cup & saucer… hand  painted… cup is 5 cm high … saucer is 7 cm in diameter.  This cup and saucer belonged to my mother and I imagine that her mother gave it to her when she was dividing up her dishes - therefore it would be around 100 years old. Nippon china first appeared outside Japan in the late 1800s after the US and Japan began to trade with each other. Americans loved china from Japan (known then as Nippon)  A Japanese trader, Ichizaemon Morimura, seized the moment, first exporting china made by other companies to the US, then starting his own factory in the village of Noritake making items designed for export markets. The era of "Nippon" china ended in 1921 when US regulations were changed to require the words Made in Japan instead of just Nippon.

P1000355.JPG (31277 bytes) 1-03 Knitting Stick… made of "bird's eye" maple and over 100 years old.  My grandmother on my father's side brought this knitting stick from Ontario to Manitoba in the later years of the 19th century (to Gilbert Plains).  They homsteaded and cleared land of trees and the first year lived in a shack made of logs and a sod roof which leaked horribly when it rained. At their simplest, these were just a hollowed-out stick. More elaborate carved sheaths go back to at least the 17th century. "Goosewing" types have a curved lower half to fit at the waist. Some had grooves to fit a belt. The longer types are more likely than others to be called knitting sticks, but names were regional, and there is no consistent rule about this. Knitting case was another name.  Knitting sheaths were attached to the waist and used to support one knitting needle so that the knitter only needed to use one hand for plain knitting. Many women supplemented their incomes by making knitted goods for sale and a knitting sheath made it possible to knit while carrying out other domestic chores, in particular carrying or feeding infants.

1-04 Commemorative Plate - H.M. George V and H.M. Queen Mary.   Number on back is "32" This listing is for a Plate commemorating the 1911 Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary.  The elaborate design shows portraits of the King and Queen along with  Coat of Arms and Flags for the various countries of the British Empire.  Coat of arms at the bottom says:  Honi soit qui mal pense, Dieu et mon droit, and below is "May their reign be glorious".

P1000396.JPG (50003 bytes) 1-05 Tie Pins or Tie Bars - in original case inscribed as:  D.R. Dingwall Ltd., Jewelers, Winnipeg.  3 cm long, 1/4 cm wide
case is 5 cm square.  Could be ivory with etched flower design, not sure what gem  is in the middle of each flower
Donald Ross Dingwall arrived in Winnipeg during the boom years of the early 1880s He had learned the jewelry and watchmaking trade as an apprentice in Montreal and established a company to manufacture and sell his exclusive line of men’s and women’s jewelry and watches.  Business proved to be successful and at the time of his death in 1913, Dingwall was prominent in Winnipeg society.

1-06 Jewelery Holder - 7.5 cm wide x 7 cm tall x 6 cm depth - original light green silk lining (shredded now).   My father kept his cuff links & tie pins in this holder.  It was probably new in 1918 when my he and my mother got married, so it is over 90 years old

1-07 Lavalier - Absolutley stunning -  In its original case marked "D.R. Dingwall Limited, Winnipeg".   My father gave this to my mother on the day of their marriage in January, 1918.  We don't know yet whether the gems are pearl, or opal (mother's birthday was in October) A lavalier is named for the type of pendant popularized by the Duchesse de la Vallière, a mistress of King Louis XIV of France. Within the fashion world, the name was eventually shortened to "lavalier(e)". The lavalier can be recognized most for its drop (that usually consist of a stone and or a chandelier type of drop) which is attached to the chain and not attached by a bale.
