On Sunday, June 26th, 2011 at 1:00 pm at the Brandon Municipal Cemetery, a dedication ceremony was held to unveil the "Chinese Head Tax Monument" that the Westman Chinese Association erected to recognize their ancestors who, upon completing their work as labourers for the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, were required to pay a head tax to remain in Canada, as well as those who had to pay a fee just to come to Canada.  The monument, created by artist Peter Sawatzky of Glenboro (who was commissioned by the Association), was designed in the shape of a traditional Chinese coin (five feet in diameter) and engraved with a pictorial of the Chinese immigrant history.  It is located near the cemetery administration office on the eastern portion of the property where it faces east towards China.  The base of the bronze sculpture, created by Brunet Monuments of Winnipeg, utilizes Manitoba black marble symbolizing a black day in Canadian history with the exclusion of Chinese immigrants and the Manitoba granite which symbolizes the solid foundation established by these early immigrants and their descendants.
