JOHN HARVARD, LT. GOVERNOR OF MANITOBA, AMONG GLENBORO SCHOOL GRADUATES FROM 1957 CLASS

By Maria Berry

On Saturday, June 2nd, 2007, Café Bru, south of Cypress River, was the site for the luncheon for the Glenboro High School Class Reunion from 1957 (50 years ago).  Prior to having a free afternoon to enjoy rekindling old friendships and touring interesting points in the area, the group of 46 former students (which included the Gr. 11 and 12 class from 1957 as well as the previous years graduating students and the Grade 10 students) sat down to a luncheon at the popular café.

Attending the reunion were the following former students of Glenboro High School:

·          Margaret (Muggs Curll) Zipursky, Surrey, BC

·          Clare and Jan Lyall, Calgary, AB

·          Janice (Howatt) Ferguson, Dorothy (Arran) and Keith Vrooman, Edmonton, AB

·          Jack and Mary Leu, Regina, SK

·          Elin (Josephson) Chambers, Detroit, Michigan, USA

·          Dianne (Graham) Ertl, Newmarket, ON

·          Frank and Loretta Jewsbury, Ottawa, ON

·          John Harvard (Heidman) & Lenore Berscheid, John and Margo Trimble, Bill and Dianne Arran, Roy and Margaret Anne Malyon, all of Winnipeg

·          Howard and Cheryl Barker, Portage la Prairie

·          Valgene (Dodds) Dixon, Pat (Dodds) Goulden, Brandon

·          Lorelie (Gudnason) Mitchell and Piet van Dijken, Ruth Christie (Teacher), Rudy and Geraldine Kovar, Ivan and Dawn Elliott, Rosalie (Gudnason) and Warren Sigurdson, Ed and Juliette Vertz, Bob and Olivia Jewsbury, Bill and Verna Mowat, Stella Mae (Fredriksson) and John Vertz and Glen and Agnes (Hilhorst) Witherspoon, all of Glenboro.

Agnes Witherspoon, representing the organizing committee of Lorelie and Piet, Rosalie and Warren and Glen and herself, welcomed everyone to the reunion.  She made special mention of how pleased they were to have their Honours, John Harvard and Lenore Bercheid take time out of their busy schedules to join everyone today as they reminisced, compared notes and generally got up-to-date with former classmates, some of whom hadn’t been seen for many years and in some cases, as many as 50!  She then introduced their friend and classmate Harvard.

His Honour, the Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, John Harvard, was a member of the 1957 graduating class, and as a part of his formal duties he addressed his former classmates, welcoming them all to this very special occasion.  He also made note that this was a very emotional moment for him and how the years had passed by so quickly.   He also mentioned how back in 1957 times were simpler then life moving at a much slower pace than today.  He shared several humorous anecdotes of his times in Glenboro, making special mention of how well he remembers playing hockey and curling in the winter and then having to work hard on the farm during the summer.  He also stressed how coming from Glenboro and this community had instilled into him a strong work ethic and how this helped him further in his career in radio and journalism and later into the political arena and now in this very prestigious position that he holds in Manitoba.  In closing he commented that “I will never forget that it all started in Glenboro.  I wouldn’t have missed this event for anything.  It’s wonderful to be here with everyone.”

At the end of His Honour’s address, Agnes let everyone know that now that the official portion of the Lieutenant-Governor’s day was over, they would be addressed as Harvard and Lenore for the balance of the day.

Prior to enjoying lunch and saying Grace, the group took the time to remember those of their classmates who have passed away:

·          Clare Anderson, Lloyd Dowd, Wayne Graham, Margret Helgason, Don Holmes, Pat Nield, Devona Oliphant, Harvey Sanderson, Margaret Ann Sigmar and David Woolverton, as well as trustee Norma Jane Hall.

After lunch Bert Wytinck sang a few of those melodies that brought back many happy memories of Friday night dances, ground cedar parties and after the movies, cokes at The Rainbow or The Rex Cafes.

Ruth Christie, their favourite teacher, was also celebrating this special occasion with her former students.

Agnes then introduced Lorelie Mitchell, who along with Agnes, both work on the Glenboro Area Foundation Board.  Lorelie greeted everyone and thanked them for their attendance at this special event.  She also spoke about the Foundation and the newly created Education Fund, and how the funds left from this reunion’s registration were going to be placed into the Fund.  She challenged the group to give to the Fund and she would match their donations dollar for dollar up to a maximum of $1,000.  At the time of printing the total had reached $2,295.00 and counting.  This donation is a fitting tribute from former students to current students in the high school.

The group’s day began at the school where coffee was served and everyone had a tour of the facility.  They then continued to Café Bru where they enjoyed a beautiful lunch served by owners Albert and Annette Wytinck, enjoyed speeches, music and more reminiscing.  The afternoon was free time but many visited the Museum, Gaiety Theatre, the cemetery and family members.  They then gathered at Spruce Woods Inn at 5 p.m. for cocktails and dinner.  There, as well as at the school, everyone enjoyed a display of year books, grad pictures and sports crests.

After the meal John Trimble thanked the organizing committee for their hard work in making the 1957 Glenboro High School Reunion such a success and a joy to attend.  Congratulations were also extended to Frank Jewsbury who was recently appointed the Honorary Lieutenant Colonel for the 33rd Combat Engineer Regiment in Ottawa.

The recitation of the following Irish Blessing preceded the evening meal and was very appropriate to the occasion:

“May love and laughter light your days

And warm your heart and home

May good and faithful friends be yours

Wherever you may roam.

May peace and plenty bless your world

With joy that long endures

May all life’s passing seasons

Bring the best to you and yours.”
