HOMETOWN MANITOBA 2010 FUNDING FINALLY ANNOUNCED! 

The Hometown Manitoba Program will once again be offered by Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI) in 2010.  Please note that the intake deadline for applications is April 15, 2010

Hometown Manitoba is a program under the Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI) that provides cost-shared financial support to rural municipalities, non-profit organizations, cooperatives and businesses in rural and northern Manitoba  for projects that enhance “meeting places“ and exterior building enhancements in the main street areas of rural communities.   

There are three program components:

 

1.       Hometown Meeting Places:  supports community projects that enhance “main street” areas and public places.  Projects may include developing/upgrading/greening outdoor spaces and other enhancements to exterior public and non-profit facilities that are accessible to the general community.  These may include outdoor spaces associated with parks, community gathering places, seniors and youth centres, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, schools, libraries, churches, museums, public administration buildings and other similar facilities.

2.        Hometown Main Streets Enhancements:  supports projects from non-profit organizations, small businesses and cooperatives that focus on upgrading the appearance of building exteriors, structures and exterior spaces in “main street” areas.  Projects may include building facelifts/upgrading, new signage that reflects a community theme and landscaping enhancements.

3.       Tree Planting:  supports community greening initiatives for rural municipalities and town organizations.  Eligible projects include parks, golf courses, or entrances to communities.

NEW HORIZONS FOR SENIORS PROGRAM - DEADLINE DATE:  APRIL 16, 2010

Eligible activities include those that enable seniors/elders to participate in social activities, pursue an active life and contribute to their community.

Examples:  Intergenerational Activities, Interactive Games promoting healthy exercise, Music lessons, Electronic learning, i.e. computers, photography and any other new activity that is senior driven.  

 

Eligible applicants are senior centres, drop in centres, friendship clubs etc. and other senior organizations that are open to the public.  This would not include senior apartment complexes or personal care homes that are for residents only.

 

The funding they are applying for must be new activities to the organization and developed by seniors for seniors. Applications and the guide to applicants are available online at: www.seniors.gc.ca .  Again, if you require a printed copy or assistance, please let me know.

 

Recreation Programs:  There will be offering a Circuit Training Class at The Zone.  Four Mondays beginning March 15th from  7 – 8 pm.  Cost $45.00 There is only room for 8 participants so do not delay in phoning or emailing the Recreation Office. 827-2575 or gcdc@glenboro.com

MANITOBA COMMUNITY PLACES

-                      Funding for upgrading, construction or acquisition of facilities that provide long-term benefits to communities inc. recreation, cultural, heritage, libraries, playgrounds, day cares, facilities for the disables/youth/seniors, community resource centers

-                      Eligible sponsors non-profit organizations, municipalities

-                      Deadline:  Feb.15th (could change this year)

MANITOBA COMMUNITY SERVICES COUNCIL

-                      Allocates lottery funds by grants &/or bingos to non-profit community organizations for recreation and social service projects.

-                      Consider requests for special projects, capital and operating costs.

-                      Level of assistance: 60% of project cost

 MUNICIPAL RURAL INFRASTRUCTURE FUND

MRIF's objectives include investing in projects that improve the quality of life for all Manitobans.

-                      Enhance the quality of Canada's environment

-                      Support long-term economic growth

-                      Improve community infrastructure

-                      Build 21st century infrastructure through best technologies, new approaches and best practices.

MRIF's primary focus - Green municipal infrastructure.
"Green" projects include those which protect and/or enhance the quality of our environment, such as water and wastewater systems, water management, solid waste management and recycling, and capital expenditures to construct or improve the energy efficiency of buildings and facilities owned by local governments.

MRIF's secondary focus - Other local infrastructure.
Including local transportation infrastructure, cultural and recreational infrastructure, infrastructure supporting tourism, and rural and remote connectivity.

  HOMETOWN MANITOBA (MEETING PLACES)

-                      To enhance community outdoor public spaces in mainstreet areas associated with parks, libraries, museums, schools, inc. public art projects

-                      Eligible applicants: non-profit groups, co-ops, municipalities, northern community councils

-                      Funding available: up to 1/3 of eligible project costs to a max. of $5000 (local government must contribute 1/3)

 

HOMETOWN MANITOBA (MAIN STREET ENHANCEMENTS)

-                      Supports projects that focus on upgrading the appearance of building exteriors, structures and exterior spaces in main street areas. (i.e.- facelifts, upgrades, signage, landscape enhancements, public art projects )

-                      Eligible applicants: non-profit groups, small business, co-operatives

-                      Funding available: up to 50% of eligible project costs to a maximum of $1000

-                      Deadlines for both of above: April 15 (fall projects), Feb 15 (spring projects)

 FCC-AGRISPIRIT FUND

-                      Funding to support capital project, including cultural & recreation centers

-                      Grants range from $5,000 - $25,000

MANITOBA IN-MOTION

-                      To help community partnerships plan and implement ways to increase physical activity among citizens of all ages

-                      Partners include municipalities and non-profit community organizations

-                      Eligible project include planning, awareness and programs

-                      Maximum grant $3000 on a 50/50 basis, match by cash or gift-in-kind

-                      Deadlines: Yearly intake (usually late spring)

ARHA - CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION INITIATIVE

-                      Community-led prevention approach to reduce number of people with chronic disease

-                      5 year funded commitment of $20,000 per year based on $2 per capita ($1 for community facilitator, $1 for programming)

ARTS DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT GRANTS PROGRAM

-                      Two components:

-                     Audience development: funds concerts and performances, readings and lectures, exhibitions

-                     Arts skills development: funds art classes, adjudication of arts festivals, training events

-                      Provides funding for festivals recognized as signature annual events in the community - celebrate and profile the unique character of the local community

-                     Festival has taken place for at least 2 years

-                     Financial or in-kind support from municipal government

-                     Open to the general public

-                     Opportunity for youth leadership

MANITOBA CAREER FOCUS

-                      Supports private sector & non-profit employers to hire high school and post-secondary students to help students access career-related work experience

-                      Criteria:

-                     eligible employees are full-time students over 16 years or unemployed youth

-                     positions must be approved by the appropriate education institution & provide career-related skills

-                      $2 per hour wage incentive

-                      Deadline: 2 weeks prior to start date or June 14

CANADA SUMMER JOBS

Canada Summer Jobs is an initiative of the Summer Work Experience program. It provides funding for not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create high-quality summer job opportunities for students between the ages of 15 and 30.

Canada Summer Jobs is about:

-                     providing work experiences for students;

-                     supporting organizations, including those that provide important community services; and

-                     recognizing that local circumstances, community needs and priorities vary widely.

Canada Summer Jobs is focused on encouraging not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create jobs that not only meet their needs, but also benefit students looking to gain work experience.

Criteria to assess the proposals will focus on:

-                      service to local communities;

-                      jobs that support local priorities;

-                      jobs that provide career-related experience or early work experience;

-                      a salary that contributes to the student’s income;

-                      an employer who provides supervision and mentoring;

-                      project activities that are directed toward members of, and support the vitality of, an official language minority community; and

an employer who intends to hire priority students (students with disabilities, Aboriginal students, and students who are members of visible minority groups).
