With Rural Forum close at hand I have been busy preparing the Glenboro display, gathering up brochures and other miscellaneous tasks. A few slight changes have been made for 2002. The Forum begins this Thursday, April 25 and runs until the 27th. A number of volunteers are lined up to work shifts at the booth. Rural Forum is an excellent opportunity to promote the Glenboro area. Earl Malyon and myself will attend the Forum on behalf of the area.

The GCDC’s 2001 annual report has been completed and forwarded to Intergovernmental Affairs for their approval. Sandra Hamilton is working on the final report for the Community Works Loans program and will forward it to IGA once completed. As a part of the report, I have updated the GCDC Guide. Copies of this document will be forwarded to all committee chairpersons.

I have applied for funding through the Community Connections program for a 12 week youth position. If successful, this student would be responsible for organizing training sessions within the community and helping to promote the use of the internet and the community connections sites to area residents. The intent is to split the student’s time between the three access sites in Glenboro with supervision provided by Jackie Steele, the Gazette staff and myself. The Community Connections program in concert with Junior Achievement funds and administers the program.

The GCDC and the Golf Course have agreed to split the cost of some radio ads for the summer of 2002 to promote the area. Sixty 15 second spots will be aired on CKLQ between June 16th and August 16th.

Brandon Seniors for Seniors Inc. have expressed an interest in a day tour of the Glenboro area towards the end of May. Roy Wallis was originally contacted regarding the tour. Between the two of us we will create an itinerary, pick a date for their trip and make all the other necessary arrangements. Thirty-give to forty seniors are expected.

I have forwarded a letter of support on behalf of the GCDC for the Arena Boards’ application to the NHLPA Goals and Dream Fund.

A South West Regional Round Table meeting was held in Wawanesa on April 10th. The Round Table is still pursuing the Leaf Rapids project as well as a Leakage Study based on PCensus data (Stats Canada information). WEDA was also discussed. A document will be forwarded to all CDC’s hopefully by the end of April. It has been suggested that under the new structure, the Executive Director will act as a consultant on community projects. Communities with projects in the works will be expected to have some money on the table and the regional staff will help locate additional funding sources and provide technical expertise. It will be project driven so that all communities benefit. No projects - no contact.

The Parks Route Board held their annual general meeting on April 11th in McCreary. Jana Watt, Development Officer for Roblin and myself have submitted an application for funding for signage and promotional material on behalf of the Parks Route. Brochures should be ready for distribution by the end of May. Businesses along the route can advertise in the brochure for a $25.00 fee. Interested Glenboro businesses should contact me no later than May 6th. The Parks Route website is also being updated (www.parksroute.com). I am the new treasurer for the association.

The Southwest Trails Association for Regional tourism held their annual general meeting April 15th in Brandon. START attended 6 trade shows last year in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the U.S. They are currently coordinating three major projects:

1. Golf/Campground brochures breaking the region down into four trails

2. Museum brochure package

3. Regional video

Costs for each vary. A tourist booth operator’s training session will be held June 15th, 2002 in Brandon from 9:30 - 4:00p.m. Cost is $20.00 per participant. New members for the board are also being solicited.

A Trans Canada Trail event will be held at the Forks on Friday, June 14th, 2002. Local trail groups have been invited to attend.

Museum Committee: Ernestine Sepke

The history book committee met on April 3rd with Ted Miller from Friesen Printer/publishers for information as to how to start. We meet with him again on May 1st at 1:00pm to set up a filing system for pictures and work on a pamphlet to mail out to the community. Our regular history book meeting will be at 7:00pm that evening at the museum. Gail Campbell will be joining us as she will be doing our layout for the book.

A filing cabinet was donated by Wawanesa Insurance in Wawanesa. We are still looking for a computer.

The north door is still for sale.

Glenboro and area have given us a grant to build some display cases for our sports section so Jack and Murray Gowanlock will be looking into that for us.

There has been no word yet on the Career Placement program. I had to fax additional information and we should find out by the end of the month.

We cleared $909.04 for ourselves from the curling bonspiel. We gave the rink 35% making our total profit approximately $1365.00.

We are gathering donated items for a summer raffle as one of our Museum fund-raisers this year.

Donna Myers donated a "Beneath the Long Grass" book to raffle off to help raise some money for the history book publication. We will be making tickets up right away and selling them so anyone that is interested in a ticket please talk to one of our committee members.

New Business: The Holland/Cypress River Homecoming is July 1st 2002 and the Argyle/Baldur one is on the August long weekend. We will send Sara the Camel to these events.

An article was read on Donor’s Choice. Donor’s Choice is where all the different charities combine together so that people only have to donate once a year. This eliminates the duplication of several door to door canvasses throughout the year. We wondered what the community would think of this?

The date of the next meeting is Monday, May 27th, 2002 at 7:30pm. This is one week later due to the long weekend.

A motion was made by Moray, seconded by Bob that we adjourn. Carried.
