The Executive of the Glenboro Community Development Corporation met in the R.M. of South Cypress on March 18th 2002 at 7:30 p.m. Present were Ernestine Sepke, Darren Myers, Joan Neale, Cliff Cullen, Moray Jamieson, Les Anderson, Bob Jewsbury and Sharon Hamilton.

A motion was made by Sharon, seconded by Ernestine that the minutes be adopted as printed. Carried.

There was no new business arising from the minutes:

Treasurer’s report: Joan reported that the Chequing Account had a balance of $8,646.10. The Savings Account has a balance of $3,537.93 with two terms of $1,091.19 each. A motion was made by Joan, seconded by Les that the report be adopted as read. Carried. Joan reported that the memberships are still coming in. Memberships have increased this year. If you would like to be a member please send your fee to the GCDC in care of Joan Neale.

Correspondence: We have agreed to purchase 60, 15 second radio spots from June to Aug with CKLQ and Star94 to advertise Glenboro. We are hoping that the Golf Course will share these spots with us. We are sending $200.00 to the Parks Route for the annual membership fee.

Old Business: There was discussion on how we can support our local businesses and how we can find out what they would like. Les is working on this.

Committee Reports:

Properties Committee: Moray Jamieson

Hall:

The properties committee have not met this month. The hall currently has 24 bookings for the Mar - Dec calendar. There were only twenty-three bookings for all of 2001. March and April alone have 11 bookings. We are still working out the details on a theme band entertainment to be held sometime soon. Tables and chairs are still on our priority list and will be discussed at our next committee meeting.

Theatre:

Financially the theatre is fairing okay. There were a few good showings with good crowds. Bills are paid up to date. The carpeting for the aisles has arrived and will be installed in the near future and will be funded by the $500 donation that was gratefully received from the Glenboro Legion. There are a number of seats to be repaired. These will be done a few at a time throughout the year. Currently we are waiting on quotes for replacing the shingles with metal roofing. Once we have an estimate we will be applying to some of the government agencies for funding. With the roof replacement we will remove the old brick chimney and install a new Selkirk chimney. The contents of the concession have increased offering a wider selection of treats. $240.00 was raised from the Theatre Pass raffle with Jerry Neale winning a 6 month show pass, Chris Wytinck with a 4 month pass and Ray Bjornson receiving the 2 month pass. The theatre committee members would like to thank all those that purchased tickets.

Rural Forum 2002 will be held April 25-27th, 2002 at the Keystone Center. Registration forms are now available. The registration fee for small organizations/businesses is $200. This includes a 10x10 booth and one registered participant pass for the plenary session, all seminars and workshops and the exhibit areas for the entire three days. I have contacted START and requested we be included with the other Westman regional exhibits this year. New for 2002 - REDUCED work hours. These areas will close earlier than in past years. Tanya Drinkwater and I met last week to discuss the Glenboro display and we have decided to order a few new pictures for 2002. Volunteers will be sought to work a shift at the booth. If you are able to do so please give me a call at 827-2575. Rural Forum is an excellent opportunity to promote the Glenboro area for the upcoming tourist season.

Website: Work continues. I contacted the school regarding setting up their own "events page" or some type of calendar of events. Since Glenboro Collegiate is such a big part of the community, Linda and I feel that a page dedicated to school activities is warranted and could provide some very useful information on sports events, exam schedules, special events, etc. A decision from the school has not yet been made. I have ordered a digital camera from Spruce Woods Electronics and hope to have it in the next few days. The camera is necessary for the website but will also prove useful in creating new brochures. There has been more interest in business pages. Other businesses wanting to set up a page or to provide a link to their site can contact Linda Rankmore directly.

A letter was drafted and forwarded to 50 Plus magazine regarding an article published in their magazine pertaining to the lack of affordable Senior’s housing in Canadian cities. Promoting rural areas and our many amenities was the intent of the reply.

The Manitoba Recreational Trails Association is hosting a conference May 3-5th in Morden. A representative from the local trail association will be attending this conference.

The GCDC (Museum Committee) has applied for funding for a summer student under the Summer Career Placements program. Funding for a 12 week position at the Museum/Tourist Information Center has been requested. Applications are due to Human Resources on or before April 2, 2002.

Tanya Drinkwater and I recently met to discuss creating new Glenboro and area brochures. It is hoped that we will have enough of the current stock to complete the year and that new brochures can be worked on over the next few months and be ready to be printed by the end of the year.

Southwest Regional Round Table: The last round table meeting was held on March 12, 2002 in Deloraine. PCensus training was held in the morning followed by the regular monthly meeting in the afternoon. The Round Table is pursuing the Leaf Rapids project but has determined that financially it is out of our reach. It was agreed to solicit financial support from various organizations within the seven communities who belong to the Round Table to see if there is enough interest in this project and if so, if these groups are willing to contribute financially to make it happen. Letters have been drafted and will be sent to the seven CDC’s, local real estate agents, school divisions, the South Westman RHA and Maple Leaf Foods in Brandon. If the response is favourable, a tour of Leaf Rapids, Lynn Lake, Thompson and Flin Flon will be organized. Two representatives from the region will make the tour to promote our areas and hopefully attract some trades people, potential business people and families to the southwest region. The closing of the Leaf Rapids mine has prompted this project as there are numerous employees who will soon be out of work and potentially willing to relocate themselves and their families.

2001 Census Figures: The 2001 Census figures were released last week. The Village population dropped from 663 to 656, a -1.1% decrease while the R.M. of South Cypress population decreased from 862 to 821, a -4.8% decrease.

Museum Committee: Ernestine Sepke

Twenty volunteers attended the organizational meeting of the History book on February 20th. It was decided that we would divide into five groups with each group having typists, proof readers and editors and one member from each group will become a chairman of the spearing executive. Many ideas and questions were discussed and because printing companies have packets that help with compiling information for history books, we decided to have a representative of Friesen’s Printers at our next meeting to be held on April 3rd. Since our last meeting, Ernestine has received quotes from Leech’s and Friesen’s. She will make a one page information sheeting of these quotes for our meeting on April 3rd. Ernestine also has questioned the R.M. of South Cypress and the Village offices about using their photocopier. They will get back to us after their monthly meeting.

Ernestine has purchased or ordered the food for our bonspiel concession. Hamburgers were made and frozen on March 6th. The theme for the bonspiel will be Mexican so we decided to serve our chili on Saturday and Sunday as part of our contribution.

We made $264.10 at our meat draw on February 15th.

No word has been received on the foundation grant that we applied for.

The R.M. of South Cypress wants our old north door if they can make it work. They will give us a donation.

We have applied for a grant to hire a student again for next year. We decided to apply to a federal grant called Career Replacement because we can get up to $6.50 to go towards their salary, whereas Career Start only gives us $2.00.

We need to acquire a computer and a filing cabinet. If anyone has these items that we could borrow or would like to donate it would be appreciated.

Relatives are gathering up pictures, etc. for the Beech Sisters display. We will start working on it after the bonspiel.

We have a number of things on hand to sale at the May Town Wide Yard sale but we will need some tables.

New Business: There was no new business.

The date of the next meeting is Monday, April 15th, 2002 at 7:30pm.

A motion was made by Moray, seconded by Ernestine that we adjourn. Carried.
