The Executive of the Glenboro Community Development Corporation met in the R.M. of South Cypress on May 27th 2002 at 7:30 p.m. Present were Ernestine Sepke, Earl Malyon, Les Anderson, Darren Myers, Joan Neale, Cliff Cullen, Bob Jewsbury and Sharon Hamilton.

A motion was made by Sharon, seconded by Les that the minutes be adopted as printed. Carried.

Treasurer’s report: Joan reported that the Chequing Account has a balance of $4,462.50. The Savings Account has a balance of $3,540.09 with two terms of $1,094.11 each. A motion was made by Joan, seconded by Ernestine that the report be adopted as read. Carried.

Correspondence: A reply was received from Agricore in response to the inquiry letter that we sent. A flier was received in regards to the Discover Manitoba conference being held on Feb 6 - 9/02.

Committee Reports:

Properties Committee: Moray Jamieson

Hall:

The Properties Committee has not met in the last two months. However, the hall currently has 16 bookings for the May-Dec/02 calendar. We are still working out details on a theme band entertainment of sort to be held sometime soon. A group from Winnipeg is very interested in performing in Glenboro. Members include the manager/coordinator of the "Alley Cats" piano bar in the Canada Inn hotel chain, members of the "Kenny Shields" and "The Freeze" recording bands from Toronto, as well as a drummer originally from Carberry. A possible date could be in June or late September. Tables and chairs are still on our priority list. We would like to have six 60" round tables and four 96" x 30" rectangle tables with chairs by the end of the summer.

The Motor Vehicle branch and MPIC have expressed an interest in renting a portion of the hall for their purposes. We will be discussing this matter further with our committee, the Village of Glenboro and government officials later this year.

We would like to thank the High School Graduation Committee for the donation of 20 new water pitchers. Over the years the Safe Grad Committees have always seemed to have some funds left over and a suggestion was brought forth for something for the hall. A much needed item in the kitchen as many have been broken or misplaced over the years. Thank you.

Theatre:

Financially the theatre is doing okay. There were a few good showings with good crowds and revenue. With summer approaching, we need to let the campers at the park and visitors to our area know of our movie theatre. We recently received a quote to shingle the roof in the amount of $5000. This quote was for painted metal roofing and would be installed with the help of some volunteer labor, which would reduce our cost. Community Places were out to inspect the theatre and should they decide to help us out financially they would like to see some other improvements:

- they do not like the idea of metal roofing and would prefer asphalt shingles

- they would want emergency lighting installed in five areas of the theatre

- the furnace room would have to be fireproofed with gypsum board

- heat detectors would have to be installed in the furnace room as well as in the crawl space under the theatre and it would have to be wired to a central alarm

- they would also like to see the lobby drywalled as well

These new unexpected upgrades will cost in the area of $9,000-$10,000. Community Places indicated after the initial inspection that we might be able to do this over a period of time. Volunteer labor, fundraising and donated items (i.e. donate a bundle of shingles) will get us started. Should you wish to participate, contact myself or Don Foster. We received a copy of a letter from the Brandon Area Foundation in regards to the Benjamin Moore Community Restoration Program. Successful projects will receive donated paint (up to $1000), color expertise and a cash grant up to $5000. Deadline for the application is June 7/02

The "Dinner and A Movie" was a good event indicated by attendees and the theatre committee plan to do a few more throughout the year. Watch for advertisements and posters.

The new carpet isles have been picked up and are ready for installation and we hope to have them installed asap. Should anyone have a free evening to help out, contact Don Foster. The more help, the faster the job will be done.

Rural Forum was a success. There was lots of traffic at the booth on Thursday. Friday was slower but Saturday was once again quite busy. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase the area with the busy tourist season close at hand. Thank-you’s are extended to the Golf course and Spruce Woods Provincial Park for donating prizes; to Joan Neale, Sharon Hamilton and Stacey Myers for making the camel cookies and to Earl and Carol-Lynn Malyon, Ernestine Sepke, Joan Neale, Les Anderson and Tanya Drinkwater for working shifts at our booth. It is clearly evident that the Glenboro area is a well known one. People in the region are well aware of the camel, golf course, Spruce Woods and the fact that we have the cheapest petroleum around! Randy Dowd also had a display booth at the forum this year, helping to further promote recreation opportunities in our area.

The Town Wide Yard sale was held this past Saturday. There were approximately 35 yard sales as well as the Farmer’s market, Pie sale and Bossy Bingo. From all reports this was another successful event attracting a number of visitors to the community. Next year’s yard sale will be held on May 31st, 2003.

The Trail Association last met on May 13, 2002. The association has received funding through the Summer Career Placements program to hire a student for eight weeks again this year. Applications are currently being accepted. In other related news, the President, CEO and Manager of the Discovery program for the Trans Canada Trail Foundation were in our area recently to view completed trail sections and proposed trail locations. They were very impressed with the work that has been done and with the Glenboro area in general. The CEO has since been working on our behalf to help solve the bridge issued on #5. There is a 3 mile gap in the Trans Canada Trail because of the bridge. Negotiations with the Highways department to solve the problem have been fruitless. The Trail association is planning a grand opening and pokerwalk to take place in July. More details are forthcoming. The Trail association will also be participating in "A Trail Event" at the Forks on June 14th. Trail associations from around the province have been asked to participate and bring with them a display, pictures and brochures of their projects to help promote our individual sections and the TCT in general. This is a big event and the Premier himself will be in attendance. The association is also sponsoring a logo contest locally.

Travel Manitoba has requested a list of community events taking place between October and May of 2003 for inclusion in their fall/winter/spring events guide. If any local organizations are planning a special event during this time frame, please give me a call at 827-2575 asap.

Randy Dowd has expressed an interest in becoming a member on the START board. As a result, a letter of support from the CDC was drafted to nominate him for this position. Having a local representative on this board is very important.

START is currently working on their Museum/Golf Course/Regional video projects. I have not yet received word if enough Westman communities came forward to participate in this program. We will be notified shortly of these projects.

I drafted a letter on behalf of the CDC regarding the government’s decision to obliterate funding to the Manitoba Great Western Harness Racing Association and forwarded it to the appropriate authorities. Other local organizations and community groups are encouraged to do so as well as it affects the entire community in one way or another.

The Parks Route Inc. is working on a regional brochure of their own. Interested businesses along the route wishing to advertise in the promotion are more than welcome to do so. Please contact me asap.

The Brandon Senior’s for Senior’s organization has included Glenboro as one of their bus tour destinations this year. They were in Glenboro on May 27th, making stops at the Museum, Kim Penner’s art gallery, the Spirit Sands and traveling to the Monastery in Holland.

Museum Committee: Ernestine Sepke

We welcome Neil Puckett to our board.

Linda Rankmore has donated a computer. We will use it for the summer and then it will go to Glen Haven manor for the winter months. Carol Fulford also offered one. Both will be used during our history book operation.

We got the Career Placement grant and have put in for a student. The job starts on July 2nd for eight weeks and the deadline for applications is June 15th. We have put a notice in the paper.

We will be doing a multi draw raffle on donated items. Draws will be made on our bingo nights.

We opened officially on May18th and will be open from 1pm - 4pm or by appointment. If anyone would like to help us out for May and June it would be gratefully appreciated. Please call Ernestine at 827-2444.

A motion was made to go in on the brochures with the other museums along #5 if it comes about.

Wendy Davidson and some members are going to be painting the trim as soon as the weather permits.

Neil is helping with the flower beds.

There was no new business.

The date of the next meeting is Monday, June 17th, 2002 at 7:30pm.

A motion was made by Les, seconded by Earl that we adjourn. Carried.
