Committee Reports: Properties Committee: Moray Jamieson Hall: The committee has discussed insulating the heating duct in the hall. The tables are on order and Bernice Friesen is looking after getting the material for the partitions. Theatre: The theatre has received cash donations of $1,580.00 plus a donation of $1,000.00 from the bingo committee. The show is now open again on Sundays. There has been poor attendance lately but this could be do to the fact that the shows have been poor this last month. There will be a show following the Santa Claus parade for the children. The roofing project is on hold until the spring. We will possibly work on the lobby and furnace room during the winter months. Agricultural Committee: Dennis Wyntick No report. Tourism Committee: Tanya Drinkwater I met with Gordon from Leech Printing and Darren Myers to review a new brochure layout. The first draft has already come back. Corrections are just about completed and ready to send back for a second draft. It should be ready in early December. Economic Development Officer: Darren Myers On October 30th, 2002 a contingent of four German soldiers were in the area to determine the feasibility of constructing a suspension bridge across the Assiniboine River. This project is being considered in order to help the Glenboro/South Cypress Trail Association complete the section of Trans Canada Trail in the area. The Assiniboine River crossing issue is viewed as the major stumbling block in the completion of the Trans Canada Trail both provincially and nationally. A press conference was held the following day on October 31st at the Park Centre with a variety of media in attendance. Prior to their return to Germany, the soldiers met with Premier Gary Doer in Winnipeg. The Premier has stated that he will appoint an engineer (most likely from the highways department) to work with the Germans. The soldiers will now design a draft of a suspension bridge. The draft will be presented to the German High Command who will determine if they are willing and able to proceed. The fate of the bridge is still very much up in the air. The media attention and interest that this project has generated is phenomenal. In related trail new, Swan Lake First Nation has expressed an interest in our Trans Canada Trail project and is eager to become involved. They are willing to develop the section of trail located on their lands north of the Spruce Woods Park boundary. Our trail committee is extremely pleased with these developments and look forward to working with the band in the future. A meeting of the Parks Route Inc. was held on November 4th, 2002 in McCreary. The Parks Route continues to work on a number of projects, most notably: 1. Upgrading the Parks Route website. The services of a professional web designer is being sought. 2. the new Parks Route brochures have arrived and are ready for distribution 3. a second highway sign location is being explored and may possibly be placed at the U.S. border 4. 2003 memberships will be requested in the very near future Community Coordinator Position: In late October I received word that the Glenboro Community Resource Network, comprised of the Glenboro Library, Glenboro Gazette and the Development office had received funding for a Community Coordinator position. The Community Coordinator is responsible for promoting and creating awareness of the local CRN, providing computer training sessions to the general public, providing technical support for the access sites, assisting the public and local organizations with web design services as well as other various responsibilities. This was a 35 hour per week position for a total of 700 hours. Total funding for the Coordinator was in excess of $5600. Unfortunately no applications were received and as a result we have lost out on this funding. I had originally applied to the program in March of 2002 for a Community Coordinator position to begin in April. Shortly after I applied, the funding for spring positions was cut. The original intent was to provide employment for a university student from April to August of 2002, but due to the cuts, this did not materialize. The response for the Buy-A-Bundle promotion for the Theater project has been very encouraging. These funds will make a huge difference in completing the scheduled work. Many thanks to those in the area who have donated towards this project. The Glenboro Greenbacks promotion is now in effect for the 2002 Christmas shopping season. Six-month interest free loans of up to $1500 may be applied for at Westoba Credit Union and used at participating Glenboro and area businesses. A complete list of business participants was placed in the November 13th Gazette. The promotion will remain in effect from November 15th to December 24th. The purpose of Greenbacks is to encourage local shopping by offering the public interest free loans. There are 12 local merchants participating in the program this year. Many thanks to Westoba Credit Union for their continued support the program. The Christmas Lighting Contest will be held on Sunday, December 15th, 2002. Judging of homes will begin at 7:00pm that evening. Please also remember to have your lights on for the school Christmas concert on December 19th. Museum Committee: Ernestine Sepke Ernestine purchased 5 four foot sections of 3 lights on each section from Home Hardware. Truelove electric will install them. Sharon Leader won our home preserve raffle drawn at the November 1st bingo. Our proceeds from the craft sale were $145.00. There were several trays of dainties left over so they will be served at our Santa Claus parade cider party. Dave Prost has the sports display case done. Valerie Verstraete has requested a special tour on November 24th to correspond with a birthday party for her mother, Sylvia Witherspoon. Sylvia is one of the Beech sisters whom we are honouring with a special display of their accomplishments in the community over the years. Ernestine is filling out the paperwork to apply for our own charity number. We are entering a float in the parade depicting the Beech Sisters orchestra and will also serve dainties and apple cider after the parade is finished. We agreed to do the March bonspiel concession again. Old Business. Friends of Marlo and Dan Fehr approached the board of the CDC to request the use of the hall free of charge for the "Back on your feet" social on October 26th/02. The board approved this request. The friends of Peter Sawatsky have requested the same for the upcoming "Appreciation and Support" social on December 7th/02. The board has also approved this request. New Business: The annual meeting of the CDC will be held on January 29th, 2003. This year a casino evening is planned. Watch for details as this will be another exciting event!
The date of the next meeting is Monday, December 16th, 2002 at 7:00pm. Note the change of time of the meeting. A motion was made by Les, seconded by Ernestine that we adjourn. Carried. _________________________ President _________________________ Secretary |
