Economic Development Officer: Darren Myers A meeting regarding the Broadband “Wireless High Speed” project was held on November 17th, 2003 in the R.M. Council chambers. In attendance were Rob Lavin from Manitoba Smart Network, Charlie Clark, owner of I-Netlink, Bob Jewsbury, Earl Malyon, Eric Plaetinck, Cliff Cullen and myself. The proposal of which the Glenboro/South Cypress area is a part did indeed receive funding from the federal government. It is now up to each individual area to decide if they are willing to commit to the program or not. I met with both R.M. and Village councils on December 9th to discuss the Broadband “Wireless High Speed” project. The GCDC has stated that they will spearhead this initiative on behalf of the entire area. The project has the full support of both municipal authorities and as a result a fundraising campaign is now in full swing. A second Community Places program installment for the theatre totaling $1,157 arrived in late November. The next phase of this project involved work to the interior including exit-emergency lights and fire rating the furnace room. Fifty percent funding for these items has also been committed from Community Places. The Glenboro CDC attended the information fair for the 2PPCLI soldiers and their families in Winnipeg on November 19th and 20th at the Kapyong Barracks. With the imminent move to Shilo in 2004 this was an excellent opportunity to promote the Glenboro area and all we have to offer. The following feedback was received from the soldiers: 1. The majority plan to live on base for at least a year and then decide where they plan to reside. Many real estate agents are recommending they do this. 2. A much smaller percentage plan to purchase a house or property close to the base. 3. A small percentage is uncertain at this point as to their plans. I would like to thank Earl Malyon and Bob Jewsbury for working a shift at the Glenboro booth. It may be some time before we know what the real impact of the move to Shilo will be in our area. I have applied to the Glenboro Area Foundation for funding for the Wireless High Speed project. Applications close December 31st, 2003. Approved projects will be announced at the GCDC Annual General Meeting on February 20, 2004. I recently met with Innovative Media Group in Brandon regarding new brochures for the Parks Route Inc. I have also completed a new editorial on Glenboro/South Cypress for inclusion in same. I placed the Glenboro and Area 2004 Community Events list in the Travel Manitoba publication. They are currently soliciting events for the May to October 2004 period. This document will also appear in the Gazette in early January. I would like to thank Jason Wood for volunteering to be “Sara” at the Santa Claus parade held on December 6th. Your efforts are appreciated. The Christmas Lighting contest was held on December 14th. The 2003 light winners are as follows: 1. Don and Jennifer Cowie 2. Gerald and Shirley Rutherford 3. Skip and Edith Arason I would like to thank Grace Olsen and Bruce Craig for judging this year’s contest as well as recognize those folks in town who do such a terrific job of decorating their homes for the Christmas season. Well done one and all. The date of Rural Forum has been announced. It will be held April 22nd to 24th, 2004 at the Keystone Centre in Brandon. Museum Committee: Grace Olsen There was no meeting in December. Fred Brock will make a sign for over the front door. Still looking for help to move Donna Knight’s piano. We will host the meat draws on January 16th, and February 13th 2004. We had an old fashion Christmas float in the parade. New Business: The CDC received a letter from the Tiger Hills Art Association in regards to concerns they had to the condition of the hall upon their arrival for their December booking. This matter has been passed on to the hall committee. The date of the next meeting is Monday, January 19th, 2004 at 7:00pm. A motion was made by Moray, seconded by Glen that we adjourn. Carried. |
