Resident of Distinction Award
The Glenboro Community Development Corporation sponsors the
annual Resident of Distinction award. Residents of Glenboro and area all
qualify for this award. Nominations are taken from the public, and the recipient is announced at the GCDC
annual meeting early in the new year.
There are no set criteria for someone to be eligible for
nomination. Anyone that an individual or community group feels has made a
significant contribution to the community this year or in previous years is
eligible to be nominated. The Development Corporation just wants to know
why you think they should be nominated . Also remember if you have
nominated someone in the past and wish to have this nomination reactivated
please give Chris a call as she has all previous nominees on file.
Nomination forms are available from Chris Tanasichuk, EDO,
Glenboro Community Development Corporation, PO Box 296, Glenboro, MB, R0K 0X0
Or reply in writing, using the following guidelines:
Name of Nominee,
Nominated By,
Reason for Nomination (200 words or less)
2010
- Garth McIntyre
Garth moved to Glenboro in 1963 and has been involved in various sports
and organizations ever since. He coached, refereed, and umpired both
school and minor sports youth teams. He was an active member of the
Glenboro Canucks
Baseball team, the Kinsmen Club, Glenboro Ambulance Services, and currently
serves as Deputy Fire Chief of the Glenboro South-Cypress Volunteer Fire
Department. He also teaches different levels of fire training and has set
up emergency response teams in Glenboro and throughout the province.
2009
- Theodore Jonsson
Theodore
is another one of those people that just materializes out of thin air to help
whenever and wherever he can. Theodore
always has had time to lend a hand even while operating his own business.
Did you need scaffolding? A table or chairs fixed?
Did you need to borrow a tool or just need that little piece of wood or
cable? Have you needed someone to
work the gate at the Fairgrounds, climb a ladder at the Theatre, sell a book of
tickets? Theodore was there and
now, with more time on his hands, will probably be there even more.
2008
- Ellen Rawlings
Ellen was nominated by the Glenboro
Health Auxiliary for her many, many years of service to the seniors as well as
the residents of this community and for her multitude of volunteer efforts
including delivering “meals on wheels”, donating her time to the Ag Society,
the
Centennial Committee, and many other community fund-raising activities.
She is an active charter member of the Glenboro Memorial
Hospital Aid since it was formed in 1947. Along with giving her efforts to
the Hospital Aid and teaching 4-H for a number of years, she also worked in her
chosen profession as a nurse at the Glenboro Hospital and shared her love and
talent for music with the congregations of the Glenboro Lutheran and United
Church choirs.
2007
- Roy Wallis
Roy has been instrumental in bringing a varied number of
services to the area through the operation of Wallis Agencies Ltd. He is
an honorary life member of the Glenboro Golf & Country Club, and had a hand
keeping the course running in the early years. His involvement with the club led to the popular
"Wallis Agencies Mixed Tournament" which has been one of the club's
main fundraisers for the past two decades. Over the years Roy has been active in
the Curling Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Senior Housing
Authority. Roy was the driving force behind the formation of the Glenboro and Area
Foundation (est. 1987), a charitable organization that donates grants back into the
community.
2006 - Stan Oleson
Stan Oleson retired from his position as
Secretary-Treasurer of Tiger Hills School Division, but has remained an active
member of the community. He is well respected in the curling community at
local, provincial, Canadian and International levels, and is an honorary member
of the Glenboro Curling Club serving many years as manager, and having
established the successful "Lady Sahara Bonspiel". Stan's dedication to
Glenboro's baseball teams resulted in "S.A. Oleson
Field" named in his honor. His many accomplishments include serving
as Glenboro's mayor (70-73) and Secretary-Treasurer (56-64). And anyone who has
lived in town knows of Stan's "fundraising" efforts, from his infamous
"hat pools" to his organization of the Glenboro Fun Fair..
2005 - Don Foster
Anyone who has gone to the theatre in the last few decades
knows of Don's total commitment to the operation of the Gaiety Theatre. Don has participated and been involved in the Chamber of
Commerce, the Kinsmen and K-40 Clubs, Minor Sports, and Ducks Unlimited, often
as treasurer. During his term as Secretary-Treasurer and later as CEO of
the Village of Glenboro, Don has been involved with the Cemetery Committee, the
Veterinary Clinic Board and the Glenboro South-Cypress Volunteer Fire
Department.
Congratulations
to Georgina Anderson
who was inducted into the Manitoba Curling Hall
of Fame as a builder at a dinner on May 2, 2010, in Winnipeg.
Georgina was one of the volunteers who worked towards amalgamating the
provincial men's and women's curling associations into one organization,
now called Curl Manitoba, and was the first female president of the
Manitoba Curling Association in 2001-02. After serving as MCA
president, she moved to the Canadian Curling Association board from
2003-2008 when she helped guide the CCA through challenging fiscal
times. While much of her curling accomplishments were in the
boardroom, Gerogina qualified for the 1993 Manitoba Scott Tournament of
Hearts as lead on the Bev Atkins Manitoba based team, going 0-2 in the
modified double-knockout bonspiel eventually won by Brandon's Lois
Fowler. She also coached her daughter Farrah Anderson to the 1996
provincial junior championship's B-semifinal.
